WebJan 28, 2024 · On 12 January 1925, twenty-five-year-old Abdul Kader Bawla, one of the richest men in colonial Bombay and a corporator in the Bombay Municipal Corporation, was murdered on Malabar Hill while out for an evening drive with his mistress, Mumtaz Begum. A day after the attempted abduction of Mumtaz Begum and murder of Abdul Kadar Bawla, the police had realized this was not just another street crime. Patrick Kelly, commissioner of police, Bombay wrote to the secretary, Home Department and said the girl Mumtaz ‘was in the keeping of the Maharaja of Indore for a few years’.
